At Cottage Homes, we believe that a safe, secure home is only part of what makes life fulfilling – it’s also about feeling connected, supported, and part of a community. For more than 150 years, we’ve been committed to providing older South Australians with affordable housing that encourages independence while fostering a strong sense of belonging.
Feeling connected to others is one of life’s greatest joys. Whether it’s a chat over a cuppa, a walk with a friend, or a shared story, staying socially active helps us stay healthy, happy, and engaged with the world around us.
As we get older, maintaining those connections becomes even more important. Many older South Australians live alone, and while independence is something to celebrate, it can sometimes lead to feelings of loneliness or isolation. Research shows that staying socially connected can help improve mood, boost physical health, sharpen memory, and even extend life expectancy. Just as we make time to look after our physical health, it’s equally important to nurture our social wellbeing.
At Cottage Homes, we’ve seen first-hand how friendship, conversation and community support can make a real difference. Our residents often say that one of the best things about living at Cottage Homes is being part of a community that looks out for one another.
Ways to Stay Connected
There are so many wonderful opportunities across South Australia to meet people, learn new things and stay active in the community. Here are just a few ideas to help you or someone you know stay connected:
- Join your local Senior Citizens Club or Men’s Shed — a great way to make friends and share interests
- Gather your neighbours for a shared meal or walk
- Ask your local library or community centre about walking groups, book clubs, music groups, or art classes
- Check out COTA SA and Retire Active SA – both run social and recreational programs for older people, from walking groups and lunches to music and dancing
- Rainbow Hub SA and Catalyst Foundation host inclusive events and social groups for older LGBTI+ South Australians
- Discover Uniity – a South Australian initiative that brings people of all ages together through shared interests in books, art, culture, food and conversation. Their events like Tea & Talk, Walk & Talk, Cook & Talk, Read & Talk and Create & Talk all focus on the joy of conversation and forming friendships naturally
- Check out the database of social activities on the LiveUp website to find something near you that suits your goals
Every Conversation Counts
Staying connected doesn’t always require joining a group or attending an event. Sometimes it’s as simple as picking up the phone, chatting with a neighbour, or inviting someone over for a cuppa. Small gestures of kindness and connection can have a big impact, both for you and for someone else.
If you or someone you know could use a little more connection, take that first small step. Reach out, say hello, and get involved.
Because sometimes, a simple conversation really can make all the difference.
