The Cottage Homes is expanding for the future.
Since 1872, The Cottage Homes has been providing safe, affordable rental accommodation to older South Australians who need it most.
We currently provide homes for over 130 people across Adelaide.
But right now, too many older South Australians are facing housing insecurity in their later years.
‘Living on the Age Pension and without a home of their own, many are struggling with rising rents’, said Ben Sarre, Chief Executive Officer.
‘The need is increasing fast. Our waiting list is long — and growing longer.’
In response to this, Cottage Homes is growing, to help even more people into the future.
‘We are excited to share that we are increasing the number of people we can house by up to a huge 26% over the next few years’, said Ben.
‘We are also expanding out of metropolitan Adelaide for the first time.’
Cottage Homes has signed a land lease agreement with Club Fleurieu to create a Cottage Homes site at Yankalilla – the first land lease arrangement of its kind in our long history.
Up to 15 units will be built nearby to existing club rooms and Men’s Shed on the spacious Club Fleurieu grounds that feature a rose garden and rotunda, a fruit orchard and shared garden.
We are working closely with John Byleveld Studios and URPS on the site layout and unit design, with the aim to complete planning approvals and appoint a builder in 2025 and commence building by early 2026.
In another Cottage Homes first, the new units will be built using modular housing which is built offsite and transported into place, reducing waste and time.
Planning is also underway for an expansion at Ascot Park, the site of our last sizable growth (10 units in 2014). In 2024, we purchased a house adjacent to the existing site which will be redeveloped into four brand new units.
In another exciting advancement, we are working with Brown Falconer Architects on a concept plan to add housing for an additional 15 people at Glenelg, including additional carparking and enhanced landscaping and communal areas for both new and existing residents.
These significant milestones in the life of our organisation will help to provide even more safe, secure, and affordable rental housing for at least 33 additional older South Australians.
‘We will continue to do everything we can to provide not just a home, but a sense of community, dignity, and peace of mind to those who need it most, well into the future’, said Ben.
