Our newest Cottage Homes community coming to life at Yankalilla has reached a major milestone, with all 14 modular homes now craned into place.
The homes arrived at the region over several days in September before being individually lifted off trucks by crane and positioned on their foundations in under three days.
Cottage Homes CEO Ben Sarre and Board Chair David O’Loughlin were joined at the site to witness the craning milestone by District Council of Yankalilla Mayor Darryl Houston, Louise Allstrom from Club Fleurieu, Brad Butler from Fleurieu Community Foundation, which is providing support for the project, and Jon Anderson, General Manager at Sarah Constructions.
The one-bedroom homes were constructed off-site by Australian Housing Co and arrived in Yankalilla almost finished, complete with kitchens and bathrooms, wardrobes, carpet, blinds and even shower glass already installed.
Cottage Homes CEO Ben Sarre said seeing all 14 homes finally in position was an exciting moment for a project that has been several years in the making.
“Seeing these homes arrive and be craned into place is a significant milestone, not only for Cottage Homes but for the Yankalilla community,” Ben said.
“There has been a clear need for more affordable rental housing for older people in this region, and we’re now another important step closer to welcoming 14 age pensioners into homes they can afford.”
The new community is being developed on land leased from Club Fleurieu and will become the first regional Cottage Homes location in the organisation’s more than 150-year history.
With all 14 homes now in position, Sarah Constructions will continue work on the site, including connecting services to each home and completing the remaining civil, landscaping and external works required to prepare the community for residents.
“The modular approach has allowed an enormous amount of work to be completed before the homes even reached Yankalilla,” Ben said.
“Now that they are in place, the focus turns to completing the site around them, connecting services and getting everything ready for our first residents. We remain on track to have tenants moving into their new homes before Christmas.”
The 14 one-bedroom homes will provide long-term, affordable rental accommodation for people in Yankalilla receiving the Age Pension, with rent set at a level that is affordable on the pension.
Ben encouraged local people to help spread the word to older residents who may be struggling to find suitable and affordable rental accommodation.
“We want these homes to support people from the local area who need them. If you are an age pensioner looking for an affordable home in the Yankalilla area, or you have a parent, neighbour, friend or family member who may benefit, we encourage you to get in touch and submit an expression of interest,” he said.
