The Cottage Homes Findon – A Warm Community in Adelaide’s West

The Cottage Homes Findon has been providing comfortable, affordable housing since 1971. Discover how history and a strong sense of belonging make Findon a special place to call home.

A cherished part of The Cottage Homes family since 1971, our Findon site was established following the sale of the very first homes in North Adelaide. On land already secured by the Cottage Homes Committee, 24 comfortable, modern, self-contained cottage units were built, complete with new roadways, fencing, and lawns. The project was completed in September 1971 – all for less than $200,000.

In a nod to this history, the original foundation and memorial stones first laid in 1873 at North Adelaide were relocated to Findon, preserving a tangible link to our beginnings.

Also known as the Lady Ayres Homes, the Findon site continues to offer 24 one-bedroom units spread across ground and first floors. Each unit features a living room, separate kitchen and bathroom, and a private verandah or balcony. Large, shared lawn areas and gardens create open spaces to enjoy, and recent upgrades have made this a truly vibrant community hub.

In 2022, significant improvements were made to the site, including new footpaths, lighting, car parking, and the addition of raised garden beds and outdoor communal meeting spaces.

In 2024, a pergola and central barbecue area were added – a place where neighbours can gather or welcome family and friends, with some long-term residents meeting for the first time at its opening.

The surroundings at Findon are peaceful and tranquil, with beautifully manicured lawns and gardens lovingly tended by residents. Mature trees and colourful garden beds frame the front of the site, creating a welcoming and inviting first impression. This green and vibrant setting offers residents a calm and homely atmosphere, while also providing a refreshing, colourful addition to the bustle of busy Findon Road.

Findon residents enjoy the convenience of being within walking distance of Findon Shopping Centre and public transport, plus the benefit of off-street parking for both residents and visitors.

Findon resident Dieter considers himself lucky to live there. “I feel safe from eviction, I have a spacious home, it’s a gratitude I can’t express,” he said.

With its own individual colours and features, and a unique blend of history, comfort, and community spirit, The Cottage Homes Findon remains a warm and welcoming place for older South Australians to live independently – and to connect with those around them.
